As energy prices continue to soar and the threat of global warming looms, there has been increased interest in the exploration of alternative sources of energy. Alternative sources, as opposed to fossil fuels, are expected to be clean, renewable and cost-effective. At present, mankind has successfully harnessed energy from wind, water and the sun. Nuclear fission has also been put into practice, although many have expressed concerns over its safety and sustainability. Perhaps the last possible option, nuclear fusion, a field that has been studied for many years, might offer a solution to the world's energy woes.
