Management of universal wastes has becomes an ever increasing problem in the States. Lack of full regulatory control has resulted in universal wastes, especially fluorescent lamps, being mismanaged causing mercury releases that threaten not only public health and the environment but also cause an acute worker safety problem. This session focused on examples of universal wastes mismanagement cases and the investigatory and enforcement actions taken by the States of Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey.
